We Worship Worship

05.08.06

“If you go to church to get your needs met, then I would encourage you not to come to church.”

I took a listen to a talk Derek Web did at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) in October 2003 entitled, “Music Style & the Sufficiency of Jesus“. He has some great insights through the lens of worship in the church that is transcultural. Good stuff.

Hello Dave HerringS

That picture of D. Webb and his band-mate kind reminds me of the Merovingian’s Twins. The white dreds and all.

D. Webbs insights are right on. He tackles a huge issue in our lives, not with pragmatic “how-to’s” but with the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ.

Thanks for the link Dave. Are you going to write a post on all the audio for chapel lectures, etc?

This talk is good in many respects; however, webb contradicts himself when he avers that “we worship a transcultural God as a transcultural people in a transcultural moment” and notes that the church is really diverse “every nation, tribe, tongue” and hence worship should be diverse. So, is the people of God and the worship moment transcultural or multicultural? Isnt the culturality of the incarnation the basis of multicultural, diverse worship?

wow, that’s a sharp ear! i wonder if he, a self-confessed hack of sorts, was equating these ideas, so transcultural=multicultural. help me work this out. culture=context. multiculture=many contexts. transculture=over/through all contexts? maybe a better way to say it is: “we worship a transcultural God as a multicultural people in a cultural moment”. thoughts?
